Launching a Clothing Brand Webshop
By CodexierPublished 4 min read
A clothing webshop looks like any other shop until the returns start arriving. Customers order two sizes and send one back, each return costs shipping, handling and sometimes the garment itself. Fashion is also driven by drops, where a whole month's sales can happen in an afternoon. This guide covers the setup choices that protect a small brand's margin from the start.
Size guides that reduce returns
Size bracketing, ordering two sizes to keep one, is a rational response to uncertainty. The cure is information. A generic chart copied from a manufacturer says little about your cut. Measured garment dimensions, chest width, length and sleeve for each size, let the customer compare with a garment they already own and like. Add a short fit note on every product and collect the reasons customers give for returns, so you can correct the guide where it misleads.
Variants, colours and stock
Clothing multiplies products fast: one style in four colours and six sizes is twenty-four stock items. Get the structure right before you import the range.
- One product per style, with colour and size as options, unless colours differ so much they deserve their own page and photos.
- A consistent SKU pattern, such as style, colour, size, that your warehouse or 3PL can read.
- Colour swatches that switch the product images, so customers see the actual colour.
- Clear sold-out handling per size, with a notify-me option instead of hiding the size.
- Stock synced from one master source if you also sell in a physical shop or on marketplaces.
Both Shopify and WooCommerce handle this well, with differences in variant limits and app needs. Our comparison of Shopify and WooCommerce in Sweden goes through them.
Drops and launch-day traffic
| Risk on drop day | What to prepare |
|---|---|
| Slow site under load | Hosted platform or tested hosting, light theme, few heavy apps |
| Overselling limited stock | Stock reserved at checkout, not only at the product page |
| Payment methods failing | Test Klarna, card and Swish end to end the day before |
| Bots buying out sizes | Purchase limits per customer and basic bot protection |
| Support flooded with where-is-my-order questions | Clear shipping dates on the product page and in the confirmation email |
Build anticipation with an email sign-up page before the drop, and send the launch email at a time you have tested. A drop that sells out calmly is better for the brand than one that crashes.
Returns policy and cost
Swedish consumers have a 14-day right of withdrawal on distance purchases. You may let the customer pay return shipping, but only if you informed them before purchase. Many brands offer free returns as a selling point; that is a margin decision, not a legal requirement.
Customer pays returns
Protects margin and discourages bracketing, but can lower conversion. Common for small brands.
Free returns
Removes a purchase barrier, but every bracketed order costs you two shipments. Needs strong margins.
Free exchanges, paid refunds
A middle ground: size swaps cost the customer nothing, while plain returns carry a fee.
Returns portal
Lets customers register returns and reasons themselves, which saves email and gives you data.
Our guide to returns and margin shows how to calculate what a return really costs you.
Photography and fit information
- Show each garment on a person, with the model's height and the size worn.
- Include a close-up of fabric and details, and the back view.
- Photograph colours in daylight and check them on a phone screen.
- State material composition and care instructions, which buyers use to judge quality.
- Add a short video of movement for key styles if you can.
When you do not need a custom setup: if you are testing a first small collection, a standard Shopify theme and a few careful product pages are enough. Sell first, then invest. When the range and volume grow, our store setup builds the variant structure, payment and shipping properly; see the pricing page or book a short call.
Frequently asked questions
Do we have to offer free returns?
No. The law gives consumers 14 days to withdraw from a distance purchase, but you can let them pay return shipping if you said so clearly before the purchase. Free returns are a commercial choice.
Which payment methods do Swedish fashion shoppers expect?
Card, Klarna and Swish cover most expectations. Invoice and part payment through Klarna are especially common in fashion, since customers want to try the garment before paying.
Should we sell on Zalando or similar marketplaces too?
It can add reach, but you give up margin and customer data. Many small brands start with their own shop to build a customer list and add a marketplace later for selected styles.
How do we handle pre-orders for a drop?
Mark pre-order products clearly with an expected shipping date, and be careful with charging before shipping. Consumer rules on delivery times still apply, and missed dates quickly become support work.
