Swedish Business Directories Worth Being Listed In

By CodexierPublished 5 min read

Directory listings sound like a relic of the phone book, and most are. A handful still decide whether a local customer finds you, because search engines and map apps read them to confirm that your business exists, where it is and when it is open. This guide names the Swedish directories worth an hour of your time, the industry ones worth adding, the consistency rule that makes them work, and the ones to ignore or report.

Why directory listings still matter

Local search results are built from signals that confirm a business is real and where it is. Search engines compare what your website says with what directories, map providers and company registers say. When they agree, the business shows up confidently for nearby searches; when they disagree, it is shown less or shown with wrong details. That is the whole mechanism, and it is why a few accurate listings matter and why a pile of old ones with a previous address does harm.

The directories that matter in Sweden

DirectoryWhy it mattersYour action
Google Business ProfileMaps and local results; reviews; the listing customers actually seeClaim, complete every field, keep hours current
Apple Business ConnectApple Maps and Siri on every iPhoneClaim and match Google exactly
Bing PlacesBing, Windows search and some voice assistantsImport from Google, verify
Eniro and Hitta.seEstablished Swedish search and map sites with real trafficClaim the free listing, correct details, skip the paid upsell unless you measure it
Allabolag, Ratsit, MerinfoCompany data pulled from registers; customers check you hereCannot opt out; make sure Bolagsverket data is correct at source
Facebook and Instagram pageTreated as a business listing with hours and locationFill in address, hours and phone; keep them in sync

Register data flows from Bolagsverket and Skatteverket. If your registered address or SNI code is wrong there, it will be wrong in every automatic listing.

Industry-specific directories

Beyond the general ones, each trade has a few places where customers genuinely start their search. Add those, not the rest.

Salons, clinics, wellness

Booking platforms such as Bokadirekt double as directories and are where many customers search first. Keep the profile as complete as your Google one.

Restaurants and cafés

Google is dominant; TheFork, Tripadvisor and the municipal or tourism site matter for visitors. Menus and hours must match everywhere.

Tradespeople and services

Trade association member lists and review sites such as Reco. Lead-selling platforms are advertising, not directories; decide on them separately.

B2B and professional services

LinkedIn company page and the relevant industry association. Few customers use general directories to find a consultant.

Keeping details consistent

Consistency is a routine, not a project. Keep one master record and copy from it.

  1. Write the master record: legal name as customers know it, street address formatted one way, one phone number, website address, opening hours including holidays, category.
  2. Fix the source first: Bolagsverket and your own website footer and contact page.
  3. Update the six general listings from the master, then the industry ones. Keep the logins in a shared password manager, not one employee's inbox.
  4. Search your own name and old addresses twice a year. Claim or correct every listing you find, and request removal of dead ones.

This routine is part of what a growth retainer covers for local businesses, alongside profile updates and review handling. If you would rather do it yourself, our guide to getting more Google reviews is the natural next step, since the reviews land on the listings you just cleaned up.

Directories to avoid

Sweden has a long history of catalogue companies that send what looks like an invoice or a renewal for a listing nobody ordered. Svensk Handel maintains a public warning list of such senders; check it before paying anything that arrived unrequested.

  • Never pay an unsolicited invoice for a listing. Under Swedish rules an unordered service does not have to be paid; dispute it in writing.
  • Skip directories with no visible traffic, no editorial control and a paid-only listing. They pass nothing to search and can collect your details for resale.
  • Be cautious with paid upgrades on legitimate directories. Measure calls and clicks from the free listing first; upgrade only if that traffic exists.
  • Do not buy listing packages that promise hundreds of directories. Volume is the opposite of what search engines reward.

When this is not worth your time

If you sell nationally online with no physical location, local directories do almost nothing; put the hour into product feeds and reviews instead. If you are a B2B consultancy, a complete LinkedIn page and one association listing are enough. The full routine pays for businesses customers visit or call locally: shops, restaurants, clinics, salons, workshops, tradespeople. If your Google profile is already claimed and complete and your details match everywhere, you are done; if you are not sure, a 15-minute call with your business name searched live is enough to check.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to pay for Eniro or Hitta.se?

No. The free listing is what feeds data and gets you found. Paid placements exist and can work for some local trades, but treat them as advertising: try a period, count the calls that actually came from there, and renew only if the numbers justify it.

Our old address still shows in some directories. Does it matter?

Yes. Conflicting addresses reduce confidence in your location and can send customers to the wrong place. Search your name and the old address, claim each listing, correct it or request deletion, and fix the register data at Bolagsverket if it is still old there.

How many directories should a small business be in?

The general six in the table above, plus two or three industry ones where your customers actually search. Beyond that the return drops to nothing and the maintenance burden grows. Accuracy across ten listings beats presence in a hundred.
