Shopify Expert or Generalist Agency?

By CodexierPublished 5 min read

If you are building or rebuilding a Shopify store, you will meet two kinds of suppliers: agencies that do only Shopify, and broader studios that build stores alongside websites, integrations and marketing. Neither is better in general. This guide explains what Shopify partner status actually tells you, when platform depth is worth paying for, and which questions reveal whether a supplier fits your store.

What Shopify partner status means

Joining the Shopify Partner Program is free and open to anyone who builds stores or apps. It gives access to development stores and tools, not a quality stamp. Shopify also runs higher partner tiers and a Plus partner track, earned through volume and track record, and a partner directory where merchants leave reviews. Those tiers say something about experience with larger stores; they say little about whether the agency understands a Swedish small business.

When deep platform expertise matters

Some store requirements push past what a standard theme and a handful of apps can do. That is where a team that works only in Shopify, every day, earns its fee.

  • Shopify Plus features: checkout extensibility, scripts or functions, B2B price lists, automation with Flow.
  • Several markets with different currencies, languages, VAT treatment and shipping rules.
  • Custom apps, headless front ends or complex theme development in Liquid.
  • High order volumes where performance and app conflicts become real risks.
  • Migrations of large catalogues with variants, redirects and customer accounts.

When broader skills matter more

Most small Swedish stores are not technically hard inside Shopify. Their difficulty lies in connecting it all: payments with Klarna and Swish through the right provider, orders into Fortnox or Visma, shipping labels through a shipping platform, correct moms handling, terms that follow the Swedish rules on distance selling and the right of withdrawal, and then traffic. A studio that also builds integrations, websites and tracking can solve those in one project instead of three.

Price and availability

Specialist agencies with higher partner tiers often focus on larger merchants, with minimum project sizes and waiting lists that reflect it. Broader studios and smaller specialists are usually easier to get started with for a first store. Whatever you choose, compare quotes on the same scope — our guide on what a webshop quote should include lists what to check.

Our own Shopify and WooCommerce store setup is a fixed-price package with the Swedish essentials — payments, shipping, moms and legal pages — and the price is on the pricing page. Be honest with yourself about scale: if you are moving a large Plus store across several markets, a dedicated Plus partner is likely the better choice, and we will say so.

Questions to ask either

  1. Can you show two or three live stores similar to ours in size and requirements?
  2. Who will actually build it — your own team or subcontractors?
  3. Which apps do you plan to use, and what do they cost per month?
  4. How do you connect Shopify to our accounting and shipping, and who maintains that connection?
  5. Will we own the store account, theme code, domain and every app subscription?
  6. What happens after launch: warranty, support, response times?

Vague answers to the ownership question are a red flag regardless of partner tier. For a broader checklist, see questions to ask a web agency, or book a call and we will tell you which kind of supplier your store needs.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Shopify Partner always better than a generalist?

No. Joining the partner programme is free and open. Higher partner tiers show experience with larger stores, which matters for complex builds, but for a standard store the integrations and setup around Shopify often matter more.

What is a Shopify Plus partner?

An agency Shopify recognises for working with Shopify Plus, the enterprise plan. It is relevant if you are on Plus or will be, and less relevant for a first store on a standard plan.

Do I need an agency at all to launch on Shopify?

Not always. A small catalogue with standard payments and shipping can be set up by a practical owner using a theme. Help pays off when you need Swedish payments, accounting integration and a store that converts from day one.

Can a broader agency also handle Shopify apps and themes?

Yes, for normal theme customisation and app configuration. For custom app development or headless builds, a Shopify specialist is usually the stronger choice.
