What Should an SEO Audit Cost and Deliver?

By CodexierPublished 4 min read

SEO audits are offered at every price level, from free reports generated in seconds to weeks of expert work. They are hard to compare because the word 'audit' covers all of them. The useful question is not what an audit costs, but what you get: a list of warnings from a tool, or a prioritised plan that explains what is holding your site back and what fixing it is worth. This guide explains the difference, what drives the price, what a good deliverable contains and how to judge a quote.

Automated report vs expert audit

AspectAutomated reportExpert audit
What it isTool output: crawl errors, missing tags, speed scoresAnalysis of technical, content and competitive factors
PrioritisationEverything flagged at the same level, often hundreds of itemsRanked by effect on your business goals
ContextNone: does not know your customers or marketBuilt around your services, cities and competitors
Typical riskFixing irrelevant warnings while real problems stayDepends on the auditor's skill; ask for examples

Scope and site size

A ten-page service site and a webshop with thousands of products are different jobs. The larger the site, the more time goes into crawl analysis, duplicate content, faceted navigation and indexing. Scope also depends on what you want covered.

  • Technical: indexing, crawl errors, redirects, page speed, Core Web Vitals, structured data, mobile usability.
  • On-page: titles, headings, internal links, thin or duplicate pages, search intent per page.
  • Local: Google Business Profile, directory listings, location pages, reviews.
  • Content and keywords: which searches you should rank for and which pages are missing.
  • Competitors: why they outrank you for your most important searches.

Fixes included or not

Many audits end with a PDF and a recommendation to 'forward this to your developer'. If you do not have a developer with time, the findings stay unfixed. An audit that includes the technical fixes costs more up front but converts analysis into results. Content work, such as writing new pages, is usually separate because it depends on your input.

Audit only

Makes sense if you have an in-house developer or agency ready to implement.

Audit plus technical fixes

Best for small businesses without a developer. Check which fixes are included and on which platform.

Audit plus ongoing work

Suits competitive markets where SEO needs continuous content and links. Often part of a retainer.

What the deliverable should contain

  1. A short summary of the main problems in plain language.
  2. A prioritised action list with effort and expected effect for each item.
  3. Evidence: screenshots or data from Google Search Console, not just a tool score.
  4. Keyword and page mapping: which page should rank for which search.
  5. Specific instructions for each technical fix, readable by a developer.
  6. A follow-up plan: what to measure and when to check results.

Ask to see an anonymised example deliverable before you buy. Our technical SEO audit checklist shows what a thorough technical review covers, and Google Search Console for beginners explains the free data every audit should start from.

Judging the price

Compare quotes by hours of expert time, what is analysed and whether fixes are included. A very cheap audit is almost always an automated report; a very expensive one should come with fixes, a competitor analysis and follow-up. Our SEO audit and technical fix starts from 7 990 kr and includes fixing the technical findings; see our pricing page for details. For a broader picture of what SEO costs, read SEO cost in Sweden.

When you do not need an audit: if your site is new, small and built on a modern platform, and you are not yet getting impressions in Search Console, the problem is usually missing content and visibility, not technical errors. Start with the basics and a Google Business Profile, and book a call if you want a second opinion before paying for an audit.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an SEO audit take?

For a small business site, usually one to two weeks including analysis and report. Larger sites and audits with fixes take longer.

How often should I audit my site?

After a redesign or platform change, when traffic drops without explanation, and otherwise about once a year. Continuous monitoring in Search Console catches most issues between audits.

Is a free SEO report worth anything?

As a quick check, yes. It finds obvious technical issues. It cannot tell you which ones matter or what to do about search intent and competition.

Will an audit improve my rankings?

Not by itself. Rankings improve when the findings are fixed and the right content exists. That is why audits that include fixes often give better value.
