.se or .com? Choosing a Domain for a Swedish Business
By CodexierPublished 7 min read
Choosing between .se and .com takes five minutes at registration and years to reverse. The right answer depends on who your buyers are today, whether you expect to sell abroad, and how much brand protection you want. This guide gives you a decision rule, explains how registration works through Internetstiftelsen's registrars, and shows what a domain move costs in traffic and work if you get it wrong.
What a .se signals to Swedish buyers
A Swedish buyer scanning search results reads a .se address as a shortcut for several things at once: the company is based here, the site will be in Swedish, prices are in kronor, and Swedish law applies if something goes wrong. None of that is guaranteed by the suffix, but that is how it is read. For a local service business, a clinic, a tradesperson or a B2B firm selling to Swedish companies, that signal is worth more than any argument for .com. Search engines also use the country-code suffix as a geographic hint, which helps when your competitors' pages are otherwise similar.
When .com makes sense
.com is the right primary when your customers are outside Sweden, when you are building a product or SaaS brand that should not look tied to one country, or when the .se version of your name is taken and the .com is free. It is also the default expectation for English-speaking buyers, who may not recognise .se at all. What .com does not do is make a Swedish company look bigger to Swedish buyers; to them it can read as an international firm with no local presence, which is the opposite of what a local service company wants.
| Your situation | Primary domain | Also register |
|---|---|---|
| Local service business, Swedish customers | .se | .com if free, as a redirect |
| Swedish B2B company with some Nordic customers | .se | .com, and possibly .no, .dk, .fi for later |
| Webshop selling to Sweden and the EU | .se or .com depending on the larger market | The other one, redirected |
| SaaS or product brand aimed at international users | .com | .se for Swedish marketing and brand protection |
| Name taken on .se but free on .com | .com | Consider a variant .se such as name-ab or nameab |
A .eu domain rarely adds anything for a Swedish company; buyers do not search by it and it carries no local trust.
Owning both and redirecting one
Owning both domains is the cheapest brand protection available. The second domain should not host a copy of the site; that creates duplicate content and splits your search authority. Instead, point it at the primary with a permanent redirect, page by page, so name.com/services lands on name.se/services. Configure the same for the www and non-www versions. Email deserves a separate decision: choose one domain for your addresses and keep it stable, since changing email addresses is far more painful for customers than changing a website.
- Register the primary and the secondary at the same registrar, under the company's own account, with the org number in the registrant details.
- Set a permanent (301) redirect from the secondary to the primary, preserving the path.
- Add both to Google Search Console and mark the primary as canonical in the site's page headers.
- Put the renewal for both on auto-pay with a card that is not tied to one employee.
Registering through Internetstiftelsen registrars
The .se top-level domain is run by Internetstiftelsen, the Swedish Internet Foundation, but you cannot register there directly. You register through an accredited registrar, and there are dozens, from web hosts to specialist domain companies. Prices differ, mostly in the extras, so compare the renewal price rather than the first-year offer. Three things matter more than price.
Who is the registrant
The domain must be registered to the company, with its organisation number, not to a founder, an employee or the web agency. Ownership disputes almost always start here.
Control of DNS
You need to be able to change name servers and records yourself, or move the domain, without the registrar's permission. Check the transfer rules before you buy.
Two-factor login
Whoever controls the registrar account controls your website and your email. Enable two-factor authentication and store the recovery codes with the company, not in one person's phone.
If a web agency offers to register the domain for you, accept only if it is registered in your company's name and you receive the login. We handle it that way in every website project for exactly this reason: a domain owned by the agency is a lock-in waiting to happen.
Moving domain later: the cost
Changing your primary domain later is possible and rarely worth it. The technical part is a day's work: redirects for every URL, updated canonical tags, a change-of-address notice in Search Console, new certificates and email records. The expensive part is everything else. Links from other sites keep pointing at the old address, and redirected links pass less value over time. Rankings typically dip for weeks while search engines re-index. Every printed item, every social profile, every supplier record and every customer's saved bookmark carries the old name. If you must move, do it early, keep the old domain registered and redirecting for years, and read our guide on launching a new site without losing rankings before you start.
When this decision does not matter much: if you are a sole trader whose customers all come by referral, a .se with your name is fine and you can stop reading. And if your existing domain works, has links and ranks, do not change it for cosmetic reasons; the suffix is far less important than a site that loads fast and answers customer questions. Unsure which applies? A 15-minute call settles it.

Frequently asked questions
Can a foreign company register a .se domain?
Yes. There is no residency requirement for .se, so a company anywhere can register one. That is also why you should register your own name before someone else does, even if you are not ready to build the site.
Should I use Swedish characters like å, ä and ö in the domain?
Register the version with Swedish characters if it matches your brand, but make the plain-ASCII version your primary. Email clients, forms and some systems still handle internationalised domain names badly, and customers cannot type å on every keyboard.
Does a .se domain help with Google rankings in Sweden?
It is one geographic signal among several. Language, hosting, local links and a Swedish address on the site matter as well. A .com with a Swedish-language site and proper geo-targeting in Search Console can rank fine; a .se simply gets the local signal for free.
What happens if I forget to renew?
The domain expires, the site and email stop working, and after a grace period it becomes available to anyone. Domain expiry is a common way for small companies to lose their address to squatters. Set auto-renewal and a calendar reminder from the company account.
