What Does Google Ads Cost for a Small Business?
By CodexierPublished 6 min read
Google Ads has no price list. You set a budget, and an auction decides what each click costs, which is why the honest answer to what Google Ads costs is that it depends on your phrases, your competitors and your website. This guide shows how the auction works, how to estimate click prices before spending anything, how to translate clicks into a cost per lead, and how to size a first test so it actually teaches you something.
How the auction sets prices
Every time someone searches, Google runs an auction among the advertisers who bid on matching keywords. Your position and price are driven by your maximum bid and your Quality Score, which is Google's estimate of how relevant your ad is, how likely people are to click it and how useful the landing page is. A relevant ad pointing to a page that answers the search can win a higher position while paying less than a competitor who bids more but sends people to a generic homepage. That is the mechanism behind the advice to build one focused landing page per campaign.
Estimating click costs before you spend
Keyword Planner, inside a Google Ads account, shows a low and high range for the top-of-page bid on each phrase. Treat it as a direction, not a quote: Swedish volumes are small, so ranges are wide and some phrases show no data at all. Use it this way:
- List the phrases a buyer uses when they are ready to act: the service plus a town, plus words like price, quote or book. Skip research phrases such as what is or how to for the first test.
- Enter them in Keyword Planner with Sweden, or your region, and Swedish as the language.
- Note the high end of the top-of-page range. Plan with that number, not the low one, until you have your own data.
- Check the search results by hand. If the page is full of ads from national chains, expect to pay the high end or more.
Swedish compound words and spelling variants matter here too: one service can be searched in several forms with very different competition. Our guide to Swedish keyword research covers how to find those variants.
From clicks to cost per lead
A click is not a customer. Two rates turn click prices into business numbers: how many clicks become an enquiry (the landing page's conversion rate) and how many enquiries become paying customers (your close rate). Work backwards from what a customer is worth to find the most you can afford per click.
| Step | Calculation | What drives it |
|---|---|---|
| Value per customer | Gross margin on a typical first order, plus repeat business if it is reliable | Your pricing and retention |
| Affordable cost per customer | The share of that value you are willing to spend on acquisition | Cash flow and how fast you need payback |
| Affordable cost per lead | Affordable cost per customer multiplied by your close rate | Sales follow-up and speed of response |
| Affordable cost per click | Affordable cost per lead multiplied by the landing page's conversion rate | Landing page, offer and trust signals |
If the affordable cost per click comes out below Keyword Planner's range, improving the landing page or the close rate is cheaper than raising the budget.
None of this works without conversion tracking: form submissions, calls and bookings recorded as conversions in the account. See conversion tracking for Google Ads for the setup, including consent mode for Swedish visitors.
A first test budget
The first month is a measurement exercise, not a profit exercise. Size the budget from the click price, not from a round monthly figure: aim for enough spend to buy a few hundred clicks on your narrowest high-intent phrases. Fewer clicks than that and one lucky or unlucky week decides your conclusion. Spread over a month, the daily budget is simply that total divided by thirty.
- One campaign, one service, one area. Split later, once something works.
- Phrase and exact match only; broad match with a small budget burns money on loosely related searches.
- A negative keyword list from day one: jobs, free, course, salary, DIY and the names of competitors you do not want to pay for.
- Ad schedule matched to when someone can answer the phone or reply the same day.
- A review after two weeks of search terms actually triggered, then again at the end of the month.
Management fees vs ad spend
Your total cost has two parts: the ad spend that goes to Google, and the time someone spends building and running the account. Agencies charge for the second part as a fixed monthly fee, a share of ad spend or hourly. A fee based on a share of spend rewards spending more, so ask how the fee changes if the right answer is to cut the budget. For a small account, the setup work (tracking, landing page, keyword structure) matters more than weekly tweaking, and it is where most of the value sits.
When you do not need help: if you have one service in one town, a working landing page and an afternoon a week, you can run a small account yourself with the checklist above. And if your site cannot turn visitors into enquiries yet, do not buy ads from us or anyone; fix the page first. When you do want support, our growth retainer covers tracking, landing pages and campaign management together, and pricing shows what it costs.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a minimum budget for Google Ads?
Google has no formal minimum; you can set a very small daily budget. The practical minimum is the spend needed to buy enough clicks to learn from, which depends entirely on the click price in your niche.
Do I pay VAT on Google Ads in Sweden?
Google invoices Swedish companies from Ireland, so the service is normally reverse-charged: you account for Swedish VAT yourself in the VAT return and deduct it in the same return. Ask your accountant to confirm for your setup.
Should I stop SEO work and run ads instead?
Usually not. Ads rent visibility while you pay; SEO builds pages that keep working. Our comparison of SEO and Google Ads explains how to split a small budget between them.
