E-commerce Platforms Compared by Business Size
By CodexierPublished 5 min read
Platform comparisons usually list features. The more useful question is which platform fits a business of your size, with your number of markets, products and systems. Choose too small and you rebuild in two years. Choose too big and you pay enterprise costs for a shop that needed a theme and Klarna. This guide matches the four platforms Swedish retailers most often shortlist to the stage they suit.
The short answer
Small shops: speed to launch
For a new or small shop the most important thing is getting live with a checkout that works: Klarna, Swish and card payments, shipping via PostNord, DHL or Budbee, and a clean product page. Shopify does this with the least effort and no server to maintain. WooCommerce gives more freedom and no platform transaction layer on top of your payment provider, but you own hosting, updates and security. Our Shopify vs WooCommerce comparison goes through the trade-off for Swedish shops in detail.
Growing shops: integrations and markets
Growth changes the questions. Now you need Fortnox or Visma to receive orders automatically, a warehouse or 3PL to pick them, maybe Norway and Finland with their own prices, currencies and VAT, and perhaps wholesale customers with net prices. Shopify handles multiple markets and basic B2B in higher plans, and a large app ecosystem fills gaps. WooCommerce can do the same with plugins, but each plugin is one more thing to update and test.
- Map which systems must exchange data: accounting, warehouse, ERP, CRM, marketplaces.
- Check that each has a maintained integration, not just an old plugin.
- Confirm how VAT is handled per country, including the EU One Stop Shop.
- Decide whether B2B customers get their own login and price lists or a separate shop.
Large and complex: B2B and multi-market
Centra and Norce are both Swedish platforms aimed at larger retailers. Centra is popular with fashion and lifestyle brands selling direct and wholesale across many markets, and is built headless: the storefront is a separate front-end. Norce targets complex retail and B2B with deep integration needs. Both assume a development partner and a front-end build, and both are priced for businesses where e-commerce is a major revenue stream. If you are not yet feeling Shopify's or WooCommerce's limits in daily work, you are probably not ready for them.
| Platform | Best fit | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify | Small to mid-size, fast launch, few developers | App costs adding up, limits on checkout customisation |
| WooCommerce | Content-heavy shops, full control, WordPress already in place | Maintenance, plugin conflicts, hosting quality |
| Centra | Brands with wholesale plus direct sales in many markets | Requires headless front-end and a partner |
| Norce | Complex retail and B2B with many system integrations | Enterprise project size and budget |
Total cost by tier
Licence fees are only part of the cost. Compare the total: platform plan, apps or plugins, payment fees, hosting, theme or front-end build, integrations and ongoing development. A cheap platform with expensive maintenance can end up costing more than a pricier one that just runs. Our guide to webshop cost to build and run breaks this down, and our pricing page shows what a store setup with us costs.
Small tier
Monthly plan, theme, a few apps, payment fees. Low fixed cost, most spend on marketing.
Growth tier
Higher plan, integrations with accounting and warehouse, regular development hours.
Enterprise tier
Licence often linked to revenue, custom front-end, partner retainer, integration platform.
Switching platforms later
A platform switch is doable but never free. Products, customers and orders can be migrated; URLs must be redirected to protect search rankings; integrations must be rebuilt; staff must learn new routines. Plan for it by keeping product data clean and structured, avoiding heavy custom code in the old platform, and owning your domain and data. Our guide to migrating a webshop to Shopify describes the steps.
When not to switch: if your current shop sells well and the pain is one missing feature, a targeted improvement is almost always cheaper than a migration. When not to buy from us: we set up and improve Shopify and WooCommerce shops; for a full Centra or Norce implementation you want a certified partner. Frequently asked questions
Which e-commerce platform is most common in Sweden?
Shopify and WooCommerce dominate among small and mid-size shops, while larger retailers often use platforms such as Centra, Norce or international enterprise suites. Popularity matters less than fit with your size and systems.
Is Shopify enough for B2B?
For simpler B2B, such as customer-specific price lists and invoice payment, Shopify's B2B features often suffice on higher plans. Complex quoting, many customer-specific assortments or heavy ERP integration can point to a specialised platform.
When should we consider headless commerce?
When the front-end experience is a core part of your brand, you sell in many markets, and you have budget for a separate front-end and a partner to maintain it. For most small and mid-size shops, a well-built theme is enough.
How long does a platform migration take?
For a small shop a few weeks; for a larger one with integrations and many markets, several months. Data quality and the number of integrations decide the timeline more than the platform itself.
