Dropshipping From Sweden: An Honest Look

By CodexierPublished 4 min read

Dropshipping is marketed as the easiest way to start an online business: no stock, no warehouse, just a shop and ads. For a Swedish seller the reality is more complicated. Thin margins meet paid advertising, long delivery times meet Swedish customer expectations, and you carry the same legal responsibility as any other retailer. This guide goes through it honestly, and ends with models that often work better.

How dropshipping works

The customer orders in your shop and pays you. You forward the order to the supplier, pay the wholesale price, and the supplier ships under your name or a neutral label. Your profit is the difference minus payment fees, advertising, returns and customer service time. Shopify and WooCommerce both have apps that automate the order forwarding.

Margins after ads and returns

The gross margin in a dropshipping calculation often looks good. The net margin is where it falls apart, because most costs that a normal shop spreads over repeat customers land on every single order here.

CostWhy it is heavy in dropshipping
Advertising per orderNo brand or repeat customers yet, so most orders are bought via paid ads
ReturnsYou pay return shipping, and returns to a supplier abroad may be impossible or expensive
Payment feesKlarna, card and Swish fees on every order
Customer service"Where is my parcel?" questions multiply with long delivery times
Chargebacks and refundsLate or wrong deliveries lead to disputes you pay for

Delivery times and customs

Swedish customers are used to delivery in one to three days. Shipments from outside the EU often take weeks. Since 2021, all goods imported into the EU carry VAT from the first krona; the low-value exemption was removed. For consignments up to 150 euros, the EU Import One Stop Shop (IOSS) lets the seller charge Swedish VAT at checkout so the customer does not pay again on delivery. Without it, the customer may face VAT and a handling fee from the carrier, which leads to refused parcels and angry reviews.

Your liability as the seller

To a Swedish consumer, you are the seller. The supplier's terms do not change that.

  • Consumer Sales Act: customers can complain about faults for three years, and faults appearing within two years are presumed to have existed at delivery.
  • Distance selling rules: 14 days' right of withdrawal, with clear information before purchase. See our guide to distance selling rules.
  • Product safety: the EU General Product Safety Regulation and CE marking rules apply; many products need an economic operator in the EU.
  • Marketing: delivery times and product claims must be accurate under the Marketing Practices Act.
  • Company and VAT: you need a registered business, F-tax and VAT registration once you trade.

Small own stock

Hold a small stock of tested bestsellers, dropship the long tail.

Own brand

Private label or your own products create margin and repeat customers that generic goods cannot.

Print on demand

Custom products printed on order by EU-based partners, with your designs as the differentiator.

When not to buy a shop from us: if the plan is a generic product from a far-away supplier sold only through ads, we would rather tell you on a call that the numbers rarely hold. If you have a niche, a supplier you trust and a margin that survives the table above, we can set up the shop properly. Our guide to starting a webshop in Sweden covers the basics, and you can book a free call to test your plan.

Frequently asked questions

Is dropshipping legal in Sweden?

Yes. It is a legal business model, but you have the same obligations as any other retailer: consumer law, product safety, VAT and accurate marketing all apply to you as the seller.

Do I need a company to dropship?

If you trade regularly with the aim of profit, it is business activity and you need to register with the Swedish Tax Agency for F-tax and VAT. A sole trader business is often enough to start.

Who handles complaints if the supplier sends a faulty product?

You do. The customer's claim is against you. Whether you can pass the cost on to your supplier depends on your agreement with them.

Can I dropship from China to Swedish customers?

You can, but you must handle import VAT correctly, preferably via IOSS, meet EU product safety rules and state realistic delivery times. Long deliveries and difficult returns make it hard to keep customers satisfied.
