Bundles and Upsells That Don't Annoy Customers

By CodexierPublished 4 min read

Raising the average order value is one of the cheapest ways to grow a webshop, because you earn more from visitors you already paid to attract. Done badly, upsells clutter the product page, slow the checkout and make the shop feel pushy. Done well, they save the customer a second order. The difference comes down to relevance, timing and measuring the net effect.

The short answer

Bundles that make sense

A good bundle solves a complete need: a starter kit, a refill set, a gift set, a complete outfit. The customer saves time and some money; you move more items per order and often clear slower stock. A bad bundle forces an unwanted item along with a wanted one, which feels like a trick.

  • Build bundles from what customers already buy together; your order data shows it.
  • Show the saving honestly against the actual prices of the individual items.
  • Let customers still buy items separately.
  • Check the bundle's margin after discount and any extra packaging.

Upsells on the product page

An upsell offers a better version of the same thing: larger size, higher quality, longer warranty. It works on the product page, where the customer is still choosing. Keep it to one clear alternative with the difference explained in a sentence. Three alternatives and a comparison table turn a decision into homework. Our guide to product pages that sell covers the rest of the page.

Cross-sells in cart and after purchase

MomentWhat worksWhat annoys
Product pageOne accessory that is needed, such as batteries or a caseA carousel of random "you may also like"
CartSmall add-ons with a one-click add, below the order summaryPop-ups that block the checkout button
CheckoutNothing, or at most shipping upgradesExtra offers between the customer and payment
Confirmation pageA relevant offer that can be added to the same deliveryA forced account creation before the receipt
Follow-up emailRefills or care products timed to when they run outGeneric offers the day after purchase

Paid extras must never be pre-selected. Under EU consumer rules the customer must actively choose them.

Free-shipping thresholds

Shipping cost is one of the most common reasons customers abandon a Swedish checkout, and free shipping above a threshold is a transparent, widely accepted upsell. Set the threshold a bit above your typical order value so many customers are one small item away. Show progress in the cart ("you are X away from free shipping") and suggest low-priced items that bridge the gap. Then check the numbers: the extra revenue must cover the shipping you now absorb.

Measuring the net effect

Order value alone lies. An aggressive upsell can raise the average order while fewer people complete checkout, leaving you with less total revenue. Measure revenue per visitor, conversion rate and gross margin together, and compare periods with and without the change, or better, run an A/B test if you have enough traffic. Our guide to what is a good conversion rate explains which numbers to watch.

  1. Record baseline conversion, order value and margin per visitor for a few weeks.
  2. Introduce one change at a time.
  3. Run it long enough to cover normal weekly variation.
  4. Keep it only if revenue or margin per visitor rose without a clear drop in conversion.
  5. Check returns too; pushed add-ons are often returned.

This is the core of our checkout and conversion work. When you do not need it: if your shop has little traffic, fix product pages and checkout friction first; see our checkout friction checklist. If you want an outside view on where order value is leaking, book a free call.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between upsell and cross-sell?

An upsell offers a better or bigger version of what the customer is choosing. A cross-sell offers a different product that complements it. Both work best when they help the customer use what they are buying.

Do upsell apps slow down a Shopify store?

Some do, especially apps that load large scripts on every page. Test page speed before and after installing, and prefer apps that load only where they are shown.

Are pre-selected add-ons allowed in Sweden?

No, not for paid extras to consumers. The customer must actively choose any additional payment. Pre-ticked boxes for insurance, express shipping or similar are not allowed.

How high should the free-shipping threshold be?

Start slightly above your typical order value and check whether enough customers cross it and whether the margin still holds. Adjust based on your own data, not a rule of thumb.
